In-store sampling vs. outside sampling at supermarkets

We get asked very often whether in-store sampling is more effective than outdoor sampling at Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Morrisons, Asda and Lidl. Whilst we have an opinion and stats on this there are a number of items you need to consider:-

Objectives
What are your brands objectives, do customers normally buy your product on their normal supermarket shop? Do customers know the brand and where to look for it? If your brand needs to educate people about the taste, health benefits, position in store of your product then its better to be outside of store where you have access to all that supermarkets shoppers for the day. If you were in-store you would only have exposure to customers in the aisle in which you were positioned. Lets assume your brand is a coffee product in competition with Nespresso for example, your customers would normally order their coffee online so would never frequent the coffee aisle, in this circumstance you have to be based outside (or in the entrance) to the store. If you were a margarine brand, being positioned in the fridge aisle would be beneficial.

Positioning
When you hear the term car-park sampling, this can be a fairly inaccurate description of your positioning, you can either be positioned in a car parking space if you have a vehicle / stand, but you can also request a position at the store entrance, a good sampling agency would probably have a good relationship with the store manager and would be able to get a premium space with potentially positioning under cover. There is a cost associated with booking site space outside / in the entrance of a supermarket and the cost per day is anywhere between £200 and £350 depending on the retailer and how many dates you are booking. If you are based in-store, you will be placed where the store manager wants you, not specifically next to where your product is being sold.

Conversion to purchase
This is quite an important metric that most brands rely on, if for example you sample 100 samples in-store and you achieve 10 product sales this means your conversion to purchase would be 10%. It needs to be stated that if you are based in-store you will only access to customers that are shopping in that aisle, your total sample volume will therefore be a lot smaller than being positioned at the store entrance. When you are not near the point of purchase your conversion rate will be reduced. On a recent campaign we investigated both positions on different days, we achieved 1200 samples at store entrance with a conversion of 4%, achieving sales of 50, in the aisle we achieved 620 samples and a 7% conversion rate or 43 sales. As you can see from the figures the brand achieved more new customers from being positioned at the store entrance than in the aisle.

Measurement
Apart from reporting on a conversion to purchase percentage, we collect sales data from the same day the week prior to the sampling day and also sales data for the two weeks following the sampling campaign. This allows us to not only prove that we have achieved a great increase in sales whilst conducing sampling, but the halo effect which is more important indicates a change in consumer behavior. If we can prove an ongoing increase in sales as a result of sampling, we can build a financial model that suggests that brands should never stop sampling. This data can be collected whether you are positioned in store or outside of store.

Agency and staff
This may well be the most important element for brands and the single biggest barrier for brands to conduct in-store sampling. Currently some of the biggest supermarkets in the UK have got and agreement with one agency to provide all in-store sampling in their stores. I don’t know why they have done this as it eliminates competition therefore creating a monopoly which in turn reduces the quality of staff and also increases the costs. Most of our customers who have trialed these agencies have vowed never to use them again. Damage is done to brands buy these poor quality staff who may be sampling a cocktail sausage in the morning and a new wine in the afternoon, they do not read any briefing notes and don’t really care about the brand. Oh and did i mention that they are more expensive than using an agency that trains their staff thoroughly and ensures the staff provided are aligned to the brand.

Costs
Why would Tesco and Sainsburys only allow their suppliers to use an agency that charges over 50% more than any other agency is beyond me, when all this buys is a poor promotional staff member and poor brand communication, not to mention a sample that may be delivered poorly.

Weather
You do need to consider the weather for outdoor sampling, and ensure you allow your customers to be out of the rain if you are expecting your brand ambassadors to engage with them and communicate the key brand messages.

Supermarkets
Whilst Sainsburys and Tescos get it wrong, Waitrose and Lidl get it right, and allow various agencies to sample in-store.

Investing in sampling does not need to be costly, it pays itself back over time. But if you would like advice on whether in-store sampling is right for your brand, and which retailer you should be targeting, do speak to us and we can give you some advice on the best route for your brand.

For Brands wanting to engage with their customer in the run up to Christmas you need to consider the environments that your customers will be in. There is a growing trend in the UK for shopping centre shopping! Fairly obviously, the background to this has got to do with the weather, proximity of shops and parking! So shopping centres are a great place for you to be connecting with your customers in the run up to Christmas!
There are however, a number of considerations in running any shopping centre promotional activity – availability, promotional stands, promotional staff, shopping centre shopper profile and cost. Availability is one of the main problems, as these promotional areas within shopping centres are limited and there only tend to be a selection of three or four promotional stand areas per shopping centre with a finite number of shopping centres in the UK. The key to selecting the shopping centres that best suit your brand is to research shopper profiles and the retail outlets in each shopping centre, then ensure the footfall (number of shoppers using the mall) is adequate – or even easier, get your brand experience agency to do it for you!
Once you have a short list of shopping centres that you would like to attend, check on availability of the site space. This is easily done by your agency and the better agencies would normally do this for free as part of the proposal. Decisions on the duration of your promotion will depend on your budget, but remember erecting and dismantling a stand can be fairly costly so to make it economical, it would be better to increase the number of live days that your promotional staff are working the stand.
Cost of site space normally doubles in November and December, so be prepared to pay a premium when capitalising on Christmas shoppers. You will also need to ensure that you have an engaging stand which not only helps to communicate your brand message and image, but also adheres to shopping centre rules no matter where you go. To illustrate this point, if you were looking to visit a premium shopping centre in London, you would definitely want to attend Westfield Shopping Centre, who have restriction on the height of your stand so that shoppers still maintain a line of sight from one store to the next. London promotional staff are also very important to the image of your brand as well as the image of the shopping centre, so ensure your agency selects promotional staff that are a credit to your brand and the shopping centre.
Ensure your stand is inviting and engaging, that your products are ‘demonstrable’ and the key benefits of your product are communicated in a professional manner by providing comprehensive training to the promotional staff. Don’t forget to make all elements relevant to your objectives. To sum up, my recommendation is to “BOOK NOW” and plan for the winter months!

Quality of promotional staff in London

I have recently been asked if there is a difference in the quality of promotional staff in London compared to the rest of the UK! There is a very easy response to this question – in every city there are strong promotional staff and weak promotional staff! I know this sounds fairly simple but you should not base the decision about which city to hold promotional activity in, based on the quality of the promotional staff.
The way to improve the quality of promotional staff on any campaign, in any city, is to ensure you use a supplier that not only focuses on the process of recruiting quality staff onto their database but also regularly cleanses the database and has a system of rating staff after every job. Don’t feel you shouldn’t ask a supplier to outline what their processes are in this regard but even better ask the agency for a copy of their credentials which should focus on quality assurance. If they have not included slides on a stringent recruitment procedure and staff rating system then they probably don’t have one.
Very few agencies actually focus on these vital steps. We commit to ensuring staff quality by employing quality assurance managers who travel the length and breadth of the country assessing activity and assessing staff to ensure what we have promised clients is actually delivered. Also, that information on staff quality is used internally to provide the next project with the highest quality staff available.
So in summary, my tip for ensuring the highest quality staff on your next promotion is to ensure your staffing agency has stringent processes which not only are used to weed out ‘bad apples’ but also ensure the promotional staff that work hard and perform, are offered as much work as possible.

Leafletting in Birmingham and London

Leafletting in Birmingham and London

There are rules around leafleting in many city centers in the UK. Gone are the days when you would run off 500 leaflets, call up a promotional staffing agency and tell them to supply you with staff to hand out the leaflets. Recently there has been a trend for inner city councils, including Birmingham and London, to license any leafleters. While it is not prohibitively expensive, you cannot leaflet without these licenses! Licenses can either be purchased in an individuals name or in a company’s name and each license can be purchased for a 12 month period.
Applications need to be made through the Birmingham City Council and all applications take a minimum of 7 days to be approved. Activ8 have applied for these licenses and can provide you with a cost effective way to deliver leafleting campaigns. There are a number of other areas that you should consider when putting together a leafleting campaign, as follows:-
• Time of day and footfall figures
• Effectiveness of literature – attention grabbing
• Number of staff required
• Delivery and storage of leaflets
• Event Managers to manage breaks and where staff are positioned to ensure maximum exposure
• Promotional clothing

We have recently managed a campaign with Homebase, which has resulted in an amazing “changing rooms” sponsorship of a children’s hospice in Walsall. You may have seen the transformation of the train station on television and Homebase wants to transform all spaces into wonderful places! To amplify what Homebase did in the train station, we also transformed a park bench in Crystal Palace park, a phone booth in Coventry and a bus stop in Bristol!
Homebase then opened up a competition for anyone in the UK to nominate their choice of public space that they would like to have transformed. I am very excited to announce that a children’s hospice in Walsall has won the competition and today we have sent promotional staff, operators, shopfitters, mural painters and electricians to transform their rooms in two days.

New dining experience “Come Fry With Me” achieved take-off last week at Box park in London’s trendy Shoreditch area!

Activ8 delivered a product sampling campaign to launch “Come Fry With Me”  which plans on opening its first store in London in the autumn. To whet the appetite and understand how consumers would feel about the “Come Fry With Me” brand we took an awesome Fry trailer to Box Park and gave away samples of the gourmet fries with mouth watering toppings to visitors to box park. We didn’t quite expect social media to play such a significant role in the success of the brand with visitors singing praises and inviting their friends down to try the new product.

We were blown away by how positive the thousands of samplers were about the product and the concept which has been widely praised. We then took the trailer over to the Foodies festival and got the same reaction which was amazing, not even the weather stopped fry lovers from queuing for their favorite flavors. Our promotional staff worked tirelessly with a smile and energy to ensure nobody was left empty handed. Well done to an amazing team of brand ambassadors and fryers – you were amazing!

Mystery shopping comes of age!

We are increasingly being asked to supply mystery shopping staff who mystery shop brand experience activity! We have always used this method internally, to visit our own brand experiences and promotions, to ensure that the quality of our staff is maintained and also to ensure that we have our eye on all live activity. The last thing we need is to find out about a problem from our client! We are now being contacted by a range of agencies to provide mystery shoppers (or as we prefer to call them “Quality assurance managers”) and we are increasingly visiting competitors activity to rate the event / promotion / brand experience.

Some may think that this is unfair – would it not be in our interest to give bad reports on staff quality? Well no, in our view we are purely improving the quality of the entire discipline and hopefully informing clients of the low quality promotional staffing suppliers. Activ8 is representing Cisco at The Gadget Show live Exhibition at the NEC Birmingham. Our promotional stand which is showcasing Cisco’s Flip Video and Linksys products will focus on visitors really getting their hands on Cisco products to showcase how easy they are to use.

Activ8 is representing Cisco at The Gadget Show live Exhibition at the NEC Birmingham. Our promotional stand which is showcasing Flip and Linksys, is exposing the brands to 14,000 consumers each day, from the 7th to the 11th April 2009. At the show we have also launched the Flip Mino HD 2!

Even with 15 promotional staff / exhibition staff and product demonstrators, we have been completely swamped. The exhibition stand was designed by Activ8 and has two sides. One side is the Flip side, which contains a band stand with full working drums and guitars where customers can jam. Promo staff fit all “Jammers” and then demonstrate how easy it is to shoot, connect and share videos.

The other side of the stand demonstrates Linksys, showing how we are able to connect a home, to be able to view photos and videos on your hard drive from your TV. We have also been collecting customers details through the use of a competition draw, which will allow us to start a mailing list. Promotional Staff Quality

Having spent the last few days at the NEC in Birmingham, I was surprised to see the varied quality of promotional staff and to be honest, I was quite shocked at the vast majority!

It was fairly evident that clients had requested promotional models to create interest in their exhibition stand. Whilst I must admit, these glamorous promotional staff (or as they are commonly referred to as ‘promotional models’ or ‘promo models’) did attract my eye, this attraction was however not converted into interest in the products or brands they represented. There are more effective ways of attracting customers to your stand. It doesn’t mean you have to spend huge sums of money on the design and build of your exhibition stand, rather think about the branding of your stand and keep the message as simple as possible. Assume people don’t know your product, and spell it out to them.

The most effective way of utilizing promotional staff is to employ great communicators and whilst they may not be eye-candy, they will convert your potential customers into new customers. They will represent your brand and create some form of connection between your brand and your customer. So in short, here are my top tips for creating impact at exhibitions:-

  1. Employ communicators that are able to communicate at different levels
  2. Training is vital – not on stand training, but rather structured training
  3. Always have an expert on the stand for more technical questions
  4. If the exhibition runs across a number of days, try to create a rota to give each of the staff a day off
  5. Ensure staff are getting regular breaks
  6. Supply chocolates and drinks – it’s a long day and hard work, so keep them energized

Why use brand ambassadors at exhibitions

Why use brand ambassadors at exhibitions

It can be very costly to attend an exhibition with very little help from exhibition organizers on preparation and planning for a successful show – well let me try and help! Focus on these 4 elements and you will be guaranteed a good profitable show:-

1) Ensure your brand is positioned with standout – its vital to have your exhibition stand designed in such a way that you will stand out from the rest, a couple of popup banners will do you no good in a cluttered environment.

2) Create a space that your customers feel welcome in – remember to make it completely approachable, from the design of your stand to the flow of people, ensure there are no physical barriers to make customers feel separated or alienated from your stand

3) Seize each and every opportunity to engage with your customers – exhibition visitors are not confident to approach you, so make sure you use engaging pro-active staff. Don’t take the chance with office staff that may not be confident. Even sales staff may not be ideal at hooking passers by, If you do use sales staff, ensure they are used for sales and not for qualifying customers. The best possible way of doing this is to use promotional staff to approach customers and ask them if they are interested in the product / service and if they are in the market for your product, this will allow your sales staff to purely focus on qualified customers, maximizing the opportunity to take orders and close sales. 4) Maximize each and every conversation you have! Have a well thought out way of collecting data from customers, whether that be a competition or a bar-code scanner. Also ensure you have the communication strategy setup before the show to ensure constant contact and followup. Don’t be scared of picking up the phone to customers. Activ8 selected as Cafepod Experiential agency

Activ8 selected as Cafepod Experiential agency

CaféPod, creators of coffee capsules designed for use in Nespresso® machines, have appointed brand experience agency Activ8 to lead sampling activation throughout 2014 in retail environments.

With previous sampling activity handled in house this is a first for the independently owned coffee business. Sampling is key to giving customers the choice of what capsules to purchase.
CaféPod roast and produce premium coffee capsules for the Nespresso system which sell widely in supermarkets, instead of only select boutique outlets. Currently selling in Waitrose, Tesco, Ocado and Amazon, their range of high quality coffee capsules champion convenience and choice for the coffee loving consumer.

Activ8 Live clients include; E&J Gallo Winery, Cadogan, Hammerson, Lidl, Columbia.

Peter Grainger, CEO of CaféPod says;
“We wanted to give consumers a premium coffee capsule that was more convenient to purchase, so consumers can pick up CaféPod capsules as part of their weekly shop rather than online. Securing quality promotional staff during London’s Olympic games

The biggest question we are faced with on a daily basis from clients this year is how can we secure good promotional staff over the Olympics? And the answer is simple, plan and commit. The following points are the most important for ensuring your brand is professionally represented over the Olympics:-

1) Commit to the activity early, this will leave the promotional staffing agency with enough time to contract and secure the best staff before anyone else is able to snatch them up
2) Try to focus your activity on consecutive days, this will be more attractive to staff than sporadic dates
3) Don’t be scared of increasing the amount you are prepared to pay for good promotional staff
4) Consider running activity out of the cluttered activity environment that is London, and look to capitalize in other cities where there should be great opportunities
5) If you are hoping to secure site space, book it NOW!
6) Ask your promotional staffing agency what measures they have taken to ensure they have a good volume of promotional staff, but not just volume they need to ensure quality. (A tip on this is to ask an agency how many staff have applied to work for them in each month and of all applications, what percentage are invited to actually work – if they employ all staff that apply to them, you have to question the quality!) Activ8 delivers Sony call centre

Activ8 delivers Sony call centre

Activ8 – well known for its high quality promotional staff, has been asked by Sony UK to manage its recent trade-in promotion. The basis of the promotion was to offer customers the opportunity to trade in an old television, DVD player etc. For that, they would then receive a discount on the purchase of a new product. At the same time it acted as an incentive to recycle unwanted equipment. The promotion was run in conjunction with the World Cup football in South Africa.

Activ8 solution included designing a dealer portal (Database) which would assist dealers in claiming the discounts given to customers. The database not only allowed claims to be submitted, but also allowed the call centre to be run seamlessly to ensure claims were dealt with in a timeless fashion. It could have been very easy for Sony to get a call centre based in India to manage this process, but the added value that Activ8 offered over and above designing the database, was to ensure staff making calls to Sony customers to confirm claims were personable and engaging.
We all know that people don’t want a cold call from anyone, so it was very important to ensure a professional telephone manner which was instrumental in obtaining a very high percentage of confirmations. With approximately 250 calls made by each call centre operative per day, we managed to make approximatley 10,000 calls per week. A very effective promotion from Sony’s point of view but also very tightly managed claims process’ ensured dealers were reimbursed very quickly.

Activ8 delivers first TV advert!

Activ8 delivers first TV advert!

You may recently have seen the new Homebase advert which includes a makeover of a children’s hospice in Walsall. Well, we are extremely proud to announce that Activ8 managed the entire project and our promotional staff feature right through the advert. This is not only a very proud moment for Activ8, but also illustrates the varied skills of our promotional and operational staff. The makeover was designed by a partner design agency but the planning and delivery was carried out by Activ8.

Over a two day period, we selected furniture from Homebase, completely cleared the Akorn hospice of furniture and stripped walls and floors. We went about installing flooring, painting murals on walls and roofs, replaced lights and installed furniture and fittings to deliver what ended up being an amazing space for the hospice. We are very proud of all the staff that worked on the project – they did an amazing job.
